Basic Poinsettia Care Tips
The Poinsettia is sensitive to incorrect temperatures, too much water or poor light. With the following Care Tips you may easily enjoy using this popular indoor plant.
Proper location
Poinsettias should – like in their natural environment – be placed in an as bright as possible spot. Is it in a room, it should be at the brightest window. If you want to place the plant in the summer outdoors, be sure to give them a transitional week in the shade with 1-2 hours of sunlight in the early hours of the day. After the transitional week, put the poinsettia in full sun. Even plants get sunburned. If the Poinsettia had too much sun early, the leaves turn white and curl up. The leaves can be cut because they won’t recover from too much sun. Put the Poinsettia immediately back into the shadows, give good care and hope that the rest will recover.
Proper watering
Poinsettias do not like wet conditions, especially to water logging, it is very sensitive. At worst, they can die. Therefore less is more. Water when the soil is slightly dry 1 inch down from the surface. First pour if the top layer of soil is slightly dry. From August, the casting can be greatly reduced, but it should not dry out.
For optimal care is best to use the immersion method. The root ball completely put into the water. If no air bubbles rise, drain the water for several minutes. When no water drips again put the plant in the pot and after about a week can crop up.
Right temperature
Since the Poinsettia native to the tropical sun, they may like it warm but not hot. Do not put right next to a heater. If it bears flowers, the temperature should be 16 ° C – 22 ° C amount. Should it be very warm, provide enough light. Temperatures below 15 ° C can be deadly for the poinsettia.
